I worked as the terrain artist assigned for the northern region (Whitetail Mountains) alongside the open-world director. Everything you see in Far Cry 5 is hand sculpted terrain, with no procedural terrain generation tools. It's an incredible amount of work, but it gives you exactly what you need to condense a space in a believable way, and make sure it navigates and plays well. I built much of the terrain in the northern region + small POIs, + some minor modeling (log flume structures, small POI props). This was one of the most enjoyable teams to work with, and was easily one of my career highlights. I learned a lot about terrain, erosion, player leading, navigation through spaces, telegraphing and populating spaces in enticing ways. I hope you enjoy some of these screenshots as much as I enjoyed creating these spaces!
